Katie Flynn & Sam Hasting
Katie - I have always loved to sing and am so happy I can sing some tunes at the Meadowbrook Park Jazz Walk! I have been in Champaign-Urbana for a year now for my husband Dane to attend U of I Law School. Together we have a two year old son named Walter who is my favorite person on the planet. I sing most Fridays at V.Picasso in Urbana and at private parties from time to time. I also wait tables at Seven Saints in downtown Champaign. I spend the rest of my time with my wonderful family, training for the Illinois Marathon and having some laughs with friends. Sam Hasting is a guitarist in his senior year at the University of Illinois. Currently, he holds the guitar spot in the Concert Jazz Band. Over the past three years, he has been fortunate enough to study with great teachers through the school, including pianist Chip Stephens and guitarist Shawn Purcell. Sam can be heard around the Champaign-Urbana area playing with many different groups.
Mark Smart
Mark Smart is an electrical engineer who has been active on the Champaign/Urbana music scene for many years playing various styles on several instruments. For the Jazz Walk, Mark will be using a laptop-based setup to perform as a one-man jazz orchestra.
Bruiser & the Virtues
The house of blues has a lot of nooks and crannies after all these years, and Bruiser and the Virtues live in the party room. Shunning the power-trio fad, the band returns to earlier, bigger forms: jump blues, hot swing, and all the other dance-oriented genres that flowed into what was then called “race music.” Performing a mix of original compositions and classic tunes from Americans icons such as Louis Jordan and T-Bone Walker, Bruiser and the Virtues are guaranteed to get the crowd off their rear and onto the dance floor. Their debut CD, From Vice to Virtue (and Vice Versa), showcases Bruiser’s writing talents and the band’s considerable musical talent. With ten original songs and touches of everything from jump to jazz, mambo to Mississippi blues, it’s guaranteed to please.
Peter & the Wolves
Although Peter and the Wolves still play a lot of standard jazz, they are playing more original compositions by leader Peter Deal. A fairly new group, these players have been playing local (and non- local) gigs for many years already, including most of their high school careers. Although this particular combination of players only unites during summers, "Peter and the Wolves" still plays on throughout the entire year, so please join them in a future show!
David Brandwein
Dave Brandwein has been playing the drums since he was 11 years old. In 8th grade he started playing jazz and has done so ever since. Dave is currently studying Jazz Performance at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois under the instruction of Professor Dana Hall. Dave's musical career has given him the opportunity to play in many prestigious situations such as opening for and working with the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band, working with jazz saxophonist Mark Colby, Northern Illinois University Jazz Festival, Texas State University Clinics, Disney Movie Music Clinics, Mundelein Jazz Festival, and many more.

Young Kim is originally from Seoul, Korea, & currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois.
D R Dixie Band
The D R Dixie Band was formed four years ago to have fun playing music people have fun hearing. We’re eight people playing seven instruments – trombone, tuba, trumpet, banjo, piano, drums, and two clarinets. Total musical experience in the band adds up to about 300 years performing (nope, no PlainSong jazz). In New Orleans style, we do Dixieland tunes and pre-30’s traditional jazz. They’re old favorites (the songs – the members are just old). Remember Bill Bailey? Saint Louie Blues? Sheik of Araby? Dare you to walk past (without at least a wiggle)! Have fun. We do.
The Parkland College Early Jazz Ensemble
