An Urbana Park District tradition returns to Anita Purves Nature Center starting this weekend, as bird-watching enthusiasts begin Sunday Morning Bird Walks.

The free bird walks run from March 1 – May 31, rain or shine. “Birders” can meet at the Anita Purves Nature Center parking lot by 7:30 a.m. The bird-watching hike goes through Busey Woods and Crystal Lake Park for 90-minutes, concluding by 9 a.m.

“We’re happy to host this free event at the Anita Purves Nature Center,” explained Environmental Program Manager Judy Miller. “All people need to do is show up ready to walk through Crystal Lake Park and Busey Woods.”

Miller encourages people to bring a pair of binoculars bird walks. “They can also borrow a pair of binoculars for a refundable $15 deposit,” Miller said. “They’ll need to pick the binoculars up during the week.”

The bird walks are open to people of all ages. Adults need to accompany kids under age 15.

“People belong at the Anita Purves Nature Center. They can enjoy natural beauty. And, on Sundays this spring, they can enjoy watching our feathered friends,” Miller concluded.
