Free hikes connect people of all ages to local nature

Urbana Park District invites everyone to free Connecting You to Nature Hikes for the month of August.

The hikes run from 6 – 8 p.m., each date:

“I look forward to hosting these August hikes,” said Matt Balk, Natural Areas Coordinator. “The hikers will learn about restoration and how to identify native and invasive plants.”

“People can see how natural areas help our environment and maybe even help collect some native seeds,” he added.

“Our explorations may take us off the trails, so please dress accordingly,” Balk explained.

Urbana Park District will provide trail snacks for hikers. The hikes are for all ages, but kids 15 and under need to be accompanied by an adult

People need to call Urbana Park District at (217) 384-4062 by 4 p.m., each hike day to let Balk plan for attendance.

“Everyone is welcome to these special, free nature hikes,” Balk said. “We’re excited to teach people that natural, beautiful areas are very close to their homes.”
