Urbana Park District is inviting everyone age 13 and up to learn and preview life guard skills. The free course is February 18, from 5-7 p.m., and March 21, from 10 a.m. – Noon, at Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center (UIAC).

“Whether people are too nervous to take a lifeguarding course, or curious about what it takes to be a life guard, the free preview class is for them,” said Jennifer Nierenhausen, Aquatics Specialist.

Nierenhausen explained, “We will demonstrate and practice the pre-requisites of becoming a life guard, and introduce specific lifeguarding skills. We will also teach in-water and dryland skills.”

People need to bring a one-piece swimming suit and a towel with them.

If people have questions or need more information, they can call Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center at (217) 3840-7665.

“We need life guards year around at both our outdoor and at UIAC,” Nierenhausen said.

Lifeguarding is for everybody. “People don’t need be look a certain way or be super athletic. Our aquatics staff is a family and all are welcome,” Nierenhausen said.

“We will hand out lifeguard class schedules to be able to register for at the preview classes as well.”

She concluded, “Lifeguarding is a special job. People learn responsibility and life-saving skills. It pays well starting at 10.50/hour and has a flexible schedule around school and extracurricular schedules. We hope many people attend our classes to find out more about being a life guard and joining the UPD Aquatics staff.”
