Fun All Day Saturday at Meadowbrook Park

Urbana Park District invites the whole community to Meadowbrook Park at the corner of Windsor Road and Race Street in Urbana all day Saturday, June 16. It is a great, family-friendly day where the highlight of the event is a free concert and ice cream topped with fresh Strawberries.

"We have something for everyone this Saturday," said Judy Miller, Environmental Program Manager for the Park District. "Almost all of our events are free, including the concert and ice cream," she added.

The day kicks off at 9 a.m., with a free Yoga in the Park program. Top yoga instructors from the area will help lead people through exercise in the open air in the Park. "Meadowbrook Park is so beautiful in the morning. People are in for a real treat," Miller said.

From 9 a.m., until 4 p.m., the Meadowbrook Park Interpretive Center will take part in the Champaign County Master Gardeners' Garden Walk. "People can take in the gardens at their own pace or on a self-guided tour. This is the one event where people need to purchase tickets from Champaign County Master Gardeners," Miller advised. People can call (217) 333-7672 for tickets.

People of all ages can be a citizen scientist this Saturday as they help log the local bee population. The Bee Spotter BeeBlitz happens in Meadowbrook Park from 10:30 – Noon. People will walk through Meadowbrook Park’s Sensory Garden and Spomer Prairie. They will take photographs of the bee population and upload the photos on beespotter.org. "The BeeBlitz is free, but please call (217) 384-4062 by this Friday to let us know you are coming," Miller said.

Has anyone ever told you to go fly a kite? Well, you can literally do that this Saturday from 1 – 3 p.m. "People can bring their own kite or build one at the Park," Miller said. "It’s a chance to get creative and test your creativity against the wind. We will have a fun competition to see who can build the smallest kite that flies, the most lavish and the simplest."

The day caps off with Strawberry Jam, a free concert from 4 p.m., until sunset at Meadowbrook Park. "We’ll hear music from The Bashful Youngens, High Cotton and the Hobnob String Band," Miller said. Be sure to save room for a special cool treat. Urban Park District will serve ice cream covered in strawberries while supplies last. "This is a great, relaxing way to wind down the day," Miller said.

She concluded, "We hope that people come out to enjoy this laid back, fun event. This is a day for everyone. Come for all or part of the day. You belong at Meadowbrook Park this Saturday."
