Students at Leal Elementary School’s after school SPLASH program and residents at the Champaign County Nursing Home know a little more about each other after a special after-school visit.

The Urbana Park District Partners with the Urbana School District #116 to provide afterschool programs to students in the Urbana Public Schools. Through the 21st Century Community Learning Center’s grant, the Park District and School District are able to bring exciting recreational opportunities to students who might not get an opportunity to engage in these activities, otherwise.

Members of Leal’s SPLASH program performed two plays for nursing home residents – one in English and one in Spanish. The kids also learned the card game euchre, and after their performance, played cards with the residents. Then before the afternoon ended, the kids and residents played an impromptu ball game.

Urbana Park District Community Program Coordinator, Niki Hoesman, explained, “The partnership we hold with the USD #116 is invaluable; it brings wonderful opportunities for the students and community as displayed through this neat experience. The residents of CCNH and the students laughed, played, and had the most enjoyable afternoon. The residents wished that we could come back every day with our smiling faces.”
