The new PrairiePlay playground at Meadowbrook Park is now open to the public. The new, accessible playground is open from dawn until dusk.
"This is a culmination of a true community effort to replace a beloved playground with a new one accessible to more people," said Tim Bartlett, Executive Director of Urbana Park District.
From 2021 - 2023, the park district solicited public input from all interested parties to get input to replace the aging Prairie Play. Grants and private donations helped raise funds for the $1.1 million project. It contains climbing structures, zip lines, swings and a music station. The park is designed to allow more people access to the park to play.
The playground will be open year around. Urbana Park District will hold an open house celebrating the new PrairiePlay playground on May 3, 2025.
"The park district is grateful to our donors, the Urbana Parks Foundation, the Urbana Park District Advisory Committee, park planners and contractors that built this new playground. It is a beautiful and exciting place to play and we hope the public enjoys it," Bartlett concluded.
