Urbana Park District today announced that it has been selected to receive a $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the State of Illinois. The King Park Revitalization Project will transform this park into an inclusive and accessible space that supports gathering, recreation, and cultural connection.
Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) awarded a total of $36 million to 67 communities for local park development projects as part of the latest round of OSLAD grants.
“Since I became Governor, it’s been my mission to build stronger, healthier communities across Illinois,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Through the OSLAD program, we’re bringing that vision to life by awarding over $36 million to local park projects, expanding green spaces and creating new recreational opportunities for all.”
Established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1986, OSLAD is a cost-sharing program between state and local governments that helps communities fund land acquisition and development for parks and outdoor recreation projects. It’s become one of the most popular grant programs in Illinois. Since its establishment, OSLAD has awarded $640 million for park projects throughout Illinois (including the awards announced today).
Lashaunda Cunningham commented, “My grandmother, Mrs. Jettie Rhodes, believed deeply in loving and knowing your neighbor. She had a vision for neighborhoods where families felt connected, children felt safe, and community pride was strong. Seeing King Park revitalized in the heart of her neighborhood reflects the same spirit of care, connection, and community that she worked so hard to inspire.”
The King Park Revitalization project is a $1.2 million dollar investment that strives to increase accessibility, community gathering, and both active and passive recreation opportunities. Project funding includes the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant $600,000 award, and Urbana Park District’s local match of $600,000. King Park is located at 915 W. Wascher Dr. Urbana, IL, adjacent to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
The current playground (pictured below), now 20 years old, is outdated and in need of replacement along with several other amenities. The OSLAD grant funding will be used to support key features such as: a themed accessible playground, multi-purpose field, expanded shared-use sidewalks, band shelter with performance seating, outdoor classroom/reading circle, rain gardens, full and half-court basketball, teen hangout terrace, challenge course, historic interpretive mural, interpretive signage, ADA parking spaces, angled parking spaces, and entry columns. This project aims to provide amenities that will ensure King Park continues to serve as a welcoming destination for residents of all ages and abilities.
