Perkins Road Site Planning
Background
The Perkins Rd. Site is made up of 60 acres of land leased from the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District (UCSD). This site is home to the Urbana Dog Park and a restored natural area involving a variety of habitats from prairie to sedge meadow, to marsh.
The site’s sanitary history contains many land uses, including a meandering stream corridor before the Saline Creek was channelized, a farm, a bio solid lay down area for UCSD, and then finally restored natural area.
Master Planning
Beginning in 2002, the 35 acres of natural area restoration was completed in 2020. The restoration was possible thanks to continuous, generous support from the UCSD. The natural area restoration serves as a vital wildlife sanctuary and conservation area. This area is not currently accessible to the public due to the ongoing rehabilitation. In the future this area will host native plantings, educational programs, bird watching and recreation opportunities.
Next Steps
Currently, the Urbana Park District is working with an engineering design firm, IMEG, to design accessible parking and a trail that will take park users through our rehabilitated natural areas within the site. Please view our Perkins Rd. Site master plan. The dog park will remain open and will not be a part of this project.
