Urbana Park District is offering Zumba classes this fall to help keep warm and fit as the weather gets cold.

Classes start November 9, and run each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:45 – 4:35 p.m., at Phillips Recreation Center.

“Zumba is a rhythmic fitness class. You get the cardio and toning benefits of a traditional fitness class while enjoying the music and Latin-inspired rhythmic combinations,” said Elsie Hedgspeth, Outreach and Wellness Manager.

Can people who have two left feet still do Zumba? “A decent sense of rhythm is helpful, but not altogether necessary. Many Zumba classes do several of the same routines at each class before changing them out,” Hedgspeth explained. “I always encourage participants to try a few classes before deciding it isn't for them.”

But she added people should try Zumba. “Don’t be intimidated. When I was teaching Zumba I always said there were no mistakes, just ‘unplanned solos,’” Hedgspeth joked.

Instructors will modify the class for people with limited range or abilities.

People need to sign up by the first class on November 9. It costs $61 for residents and $92 for non-residents.

Call (217) 367-1544 to register on register for Zumba online.

“Zumba classes can be some of the most fun you will have while working out. The music is fun and upbeat. Oftentimes a 50 minute class flies by before you realize how great of a workout you have completed,” Hedgspeth concluded.
