UPDAC Applications Being Accepted Through April 30

March 29, 2016 08:37 AM

Started more than 30 years ago, the Urbana Park District Advisory Committee helps the board and park district staff to create long-term benefits for the community by bringing citizen concerns to the forefront. The Urbana Park District is seeking Urbana Park District residents interested in being appointed by the Urbana Park District Board of Commissioners to UPDAC to fill spots of citizen advisory committee members whose terms are completed.

Citizens from throughout Urbana sit on the committee each year.  They work to represent their neighborhood and neighborhood park.  “What better way to find out what’s going on in a park than to talk with someone who lives nearby and uses that park,” said Development Manager Ellen Kirsanoff.

Kirsanoff encourages park district residents to attend an UPDAC meeting or to talk with an UPDAC member. “They want to hear the ideas from their neighbors and to find out what the park district can and is doing for them,” she added.

The current Board of Commissioners is made up mostly of representatives who began their association with the Urbana Park District as UPDAC volunteers. Later they ran for elected positions on the board.

“UPDAC members bring areas of expertise we don’t have right at the time when we need them. The committee is a whole different way of tapping into the rich resources in the community,” said Kirsanoff.

Kirsanoff encourages anyone interested in serving to speak with a current or former UPDAC member to learn more.

The advisory committee meets at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month at 1011 E. Kerr, Urbana.  If you are interested in serving on a future advisory committee, applications are being accepted at the Urbana Park District through April 30. Contact Kirsanoff at 217-367-1536 or erkirsanoff@urbanaparks.org for additional information.
