Anita Purves Nature Center goes green using solar power

The Urbana Park District’s Anita Purves Nature Center is getting solar power this week.

“This is a great 40th anniversary present for the Nature Center,” said Judy Miller, Environmental Program Manager. “We help people discover the value of good environmental conservation, and solar power does just that.”

There will be a solar power monitoring station inside the Nature Center showing how the sun helps power the building. “People can interact with the display and learn more about solar energy,” Miller added.

The Nature Center originally had a solar water system many years ago. “It is exciting for us to have renewable energy in our building again,” Miller commented.

The Urbana Park District is committed to good environmental practices, and recently was recognized by the Illinois Association of Park Districts with its “Best of the Best Award for Green Practices.”

“Solar power is just another step in our being good stewards of the environment. When the installation is finished, we welcome people to come to the Nature Center and learn more about solar power,” Miller concluded.
