Calling all birders! Sunday Morning Bird Walks are back

People who love bird watching or want to learn more about birds can go on a free bird walk each Sunday at Urbana Park District’s Anita Purves Nature Center beginning March 3.

The bird walks run Sundays March 3 through May 26 from 7:30 – 9 a.m.

On Sundays April 7th to May 12th from 7:15am-9:45am, the nature center will be open to the public for Birds, Binoculars and Beverages, a program in celebration of the nature center’s 40th anniversary where you can enjoy FREE coffee and light snacks before or after the Sunday Morning Bird Walks.

The Champaign County Audubon Society leaders will lead the bird walks where they will teach basic bird watching and identification techniques. The CCAS is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

“We’re happy to host this free event at the Anita Purves Nature Center,” explained Environmental Program Manager Judy Miller. “All people need to do is show up ready to walk through Crystal Lake Park and Busey Woods.”

Miller encourages people to bring a pair of binoculars bird walks. “They can also borrow a pair of binoculars for a refundable $15 deposit,” Miller said. “They’ll need to pick the binoculars up during the week.”

The bird walks are open to people of all ages. Adults need to accompany kids under age 15.

“People belong at the Anita Purves Nature Center. They can enjoy natural beauty. And, on Sundays this spring, they can enjoy watching our feathered friends,” Miller concluded.
