On November 16, from 1-4 p.m., you can visit the Anita Purves Nature Center to celebrate national America Recycles Day. This free event is in collaboration with the City of Urbana’s U-Cycle program and will feature an activity and display from the IDEA Store.

“We can’t wait to share creative reuse ideas with visitors,” said Savannah Donovan, Environmental Public Program Coordinator. “People are doing a lot of interesting things to reduce household waste.”

The event will feature ways that people can repurpose things that would normally end up in the trash. “People can even make their own creation out of reused or repurposed materials,” Donovan explained, “and bring it to the nature center on November 16 for everyone to see during the fifth-annual Creative Reuse Competition. They may even win an award!”

You can call Donovan at (217) 384-4062 to find out more about the competition.

The nature center also will demonstrate how to recycle old paper into new. “We are inviting visitors to try their hand at creating unique pieces of paper at the Pulp to Paper activity from 1:30-2:30pm,” Donovan added.

“The amount of waste that humans produce is getting unmanageable,” Donovan said. “But there are simple things that we can each do to reduce our impact on the environment. We welcome everyone to the nature center on November 16 to discover fun ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.”

The following items will be accepted for recycling: holiday string lights, household batteries, cell phones, ink jet cartridges, and 6-pack rings.

“The event is free and open to everyone. We hope to see you there,” Donovan concluded.
