Urbana Park District invites the public to come to Anita Purves Nature Center Tuesdays in March for Happy Hour Hikes.

The free hikes run each Tuesday from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m., and anyone can attend.

“At these events you’ll be able to learn from a naturalist who can point out things you might not have noticed in the woods, learn from other hikers’ experience, and relax to the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of a wild place,” said Olivia Webb, Environmental Public Program Assistant.

Webb added, “The content of the hikes is aimed at adults, but children may attend as well. It is helpful, but by no means necessary, to call the nature center (384-4062) to let us know you’re coming.”

The hikers will spend Tuesdays in March looking for the first signs of spring or enjoy winter retreating from the Busey Woods.

Depending on the popularity of the March hikes, the Anita Purves Nature Center may add more of these events in the future.

Webb says that she hopes the hikers incorporate an appreciation for nature during the week and not just at the nature center.

“I hope that hikers who incorporate the nature walk into their week enjoy the stress relief and mental clarity that the fresh air can bring, and that those who attend week after week come away with a deeper understanding of place as they observe the gradual changes of the seasons,” Webb concluded.
