Free migratory bird-watching event Saturday

Just look in the sky or in the trees and there is no doubt about it: birds are migrating and on the move. Urbana Park District has a free migratory bird-watching day this Saturday, May 11, from 7 – 10 a.m., at Anita Purves Nature Center.
“People can hike through Busey Woods during the morning and bird-watch,” said Judy Miller, Environmental Program Manager.
Two Illinois Natural History Survey ornithologists will be at the nature center netting and banding birds. “They’ll then set the birds free to continue their journey,” Miller explained. “The bands will help other ornithologists track the migratory habits of birds.”
People can watch the netting and banding process and learn more about what ornithologists do and learn more about birds.
“The event is free, but we encourage donations to help us feed birds at the nature center,” Miller said. She concluded, “We hope to see many people come out to the nature center on Saturday and learn more about our feathered friends and their travels through Champaign-Urbana.”
