The 50th anniversary of Earth Day will look different this year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, you can still show your support for a healthy planet.

On Wednesday, April 22, everyone in the Champaign County area and beyond is encouraged to emerge from their homes at noon, stand on their porch or driveway and wave to their neighbors. “It is a way to build community by staying physically distant and also demonstrate your commitment for the environment,” said Savannah Donovan, Environmental Public Program Coordinator at Anita Purves Nature Center.

You can get more information at the C-U on Earth Day 2020 website where you can also choose to register your approximate location for display on the website's map. “We encourage people to register their location and invite their friends and neighbors to take part,” Donovan added.

The website also gives ideas for other things you can do from home during the event, as well as suggestions for more ways to celebrate Earth Day under the “What Else Can I Do?” tab.

“Though we will remain physically distant on this 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we can still feel connected and inspired. Join us for C-U on Earth Day this Wednesday, April 22nd at noon,” Donovan said. “If there is anything we can learn from celebrating Earth Day during a pandemic, it is that our individual actions do add up! Let's commit to making a difference in 2020.”
