Urbana Park District will use a grant from Illinois American Water to help plant trees at King Park later this year.

In April 2021, the Urbana Park District received a $1920 grant from the Illinois American Water Environmental Grant Program. This grant funds projects which have positive environmental impacts such as watershed cleanups, reforestation efforts, and habitat restoration.

“This project promotes the planting of tree species providing extra benefits to pollinators such as butterflies and moths. Eight new trees such as River Birch which supports over 400 species of butterflies and moths, will join other beneficial trees in the park such as Oaks, Maples, and Crabapples,” explains Park Planner, Kara Dudek. “The Urbana Park District is incredibly appreciative of Illinois American Water’s support.”

The grant will fund eight new trees in King Park, watering bags, and small placards to help the community learn about the new species types.

Urbana Park District plans to plant the trees at King Park later this fall.

If safe to gather in groups during planting time this fall, the district hopes to invite students from adjacent King Elementary School to join in the planting, learning, and environmental stewardship.
