We’ve all seen dancers cutting a rug to some great big band music. From October 20 to November 24, Urbana Park District is hosting swing dance classes at Phillips Recreating Center.

The classes are on Sunday evenings and for people age 15 and up.

“We have beginning and intermediate classes,” said Niki Hoesman, Community Program Coordinator. “People learn dance moves in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.”

If people register before October 6, it will cost $23 for residents and $35 for non-residents. After October 6, it will cost $28 for residents and $42 for non-residents.

“These dance lessons are not only a blast, but a great value,” Hoesman added.

After the 45-minute class, the students get a half hour of open dance. “That’s when the students can cut loose and show what they’ve learned,” Hoesman said.

People can come just as they are. “There are no special shoes required, and people don’t need to bring a dance partner,” Hoesman explained.

She concluded, “Swing dance class is great exercise and a great chance to have fun with friends and make new friends. Everyone belongs and everyone is welcome to swing dance class.”
