Learn to harness your own solar power July 20

Solar power isn’t limited to panels on the roof of a building. People can learn how to make their own sun-powered contraptions at a special workshop at Anita Purves Nature Center on Saturday, July 20.

Staff at the center are busy gathering recycled materials to get ready for the craft-based workshop, where participants will try their hand at building small solar roasters and driers to take home.

After their creations are finished, participants can take home resources to try other solar projects at home, like sundials and solar prints.

It costs $7 for residents to register and $10 for non-residents. People need to register by July 13. Children ages 8 and up are welcome with a registered adult.

Urbana Park District hopes the workshop will give everyone a chance to learn new skills while celebrating solar power in all its forms.
