New program teaches kids to be safe baby sitters

Urbana Park District invites everyone ages 11 – 14 (grades 6 – 8) to sign up for the Safe Sitter Life Skills and Childcare Training Course. Taught in a fun and interactive format, Safe Sitter® shows participants safe and nurturing childcare techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. Class materials are included in the fee.

"This course is hands-on and a great way to learn the skills you need to kick off your babysitting career! We cover everything from diaper changing and choking, to child behavior and how to screen jobs safely while setting fair fees," Chelsea Prahl, Safe Sitter® Certified Instructor and park district employee said.

Course content includes:

 • Safety Skills: Indoor safety, outdoor safety, online safety, and personal safety.

 • Child Care Skills: Child development, childcare routines including diapering and behavior management.

 • First Aid & Rescue Skills: Injury prevention, injury management, and choking rescue.

 • Life & Business Skills: Screening jobs, setting fees, and greeting employers.

The course is Saturday, October 8, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at Phillips Recreation Center.

It costs $25 for the class - financial assistant is available. People can call (217) 367-1544 to register or sign up online at urbanaparks.org/register.

All people ages 11 - 14 are welcome to this class!
