A favorite opportunity for all bird lovers returns this late summer and fall. Sunday Morning Bird Walks with the Champaign County Audubon Society are back each Sunday in September and October from 7:30 – 9 a.m.

“Leaders from our local Audubon Society chapter will guide your walk through Busey Woods and Crystal Lake Park,” said Savannah Donovan, Environmental Program Manager. “They help participants learn how to spot birds and then identify them based on their markings and their calls.” She added, “Fall is a great time for birdwatching because that is when birds begin their fall migration.”

Before joining a walk, check online at www.champaigncountyaudubon.org for the most up-to-date information. Participants will meet at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot outside the Anita Purves Nature Center.

New this season, the Anita Purves Nature Center will be open to the public on Sundays in September and October from 9am-4pm. After the bird walks, participants can come inside to check out new exhibits, including the Eastern screech owls that live at the nature center.

Binoculars are available to loan from the Anita Purves Nature Center. Stop by Monday-Saturday from 9am-4pm to borrow a pair in time for the Sunday walk.

The goal of the bird walks is to spread the joy and fascination of bird watching and help beginners learn and practice basic bird watching and identification techniques.

These walks are free for all ages. People under age 15 need to be accompanied by an adult.

“Everyone is welcome during Sunday Morning Bird Walks. Come out and enjoy a relaxed walk in nature among our feathered friends,” Donovan concluded.
