Urbana Park District celebrates biking May 23

Get your bike off the garage hook, dust off the seat and put oil on the chain. Urbana Park District is inviting the public to celebrate biking May 23 at Weaver Park, 2205 East Main Street, Urbana.

This is the grand new Kickapoo Rail Trail trailhead supported by funds from the Urbana Parks Foundation.

"May is National Bike Month and the Park District wants to recognize the vibrant biking community in the city," said Elsie Hedgspeth, Outreach and Wellness Manager at Urbana Park District.

People can come to Weaver Park on May 23, beginning at 6 p.m., for a free concert. Families can also visit biking experts at the park. "Those experts will be performing bike safety check-ups," Hedgspeth explained.

At 6:50, representatives from Urbana Park District and the Urbana Parks Foundation will cut the ribbon opening the Kickapoo Rail Trail trailhead at Weaver Park. Also, Urbana Park District will share good news about how the district is being recognized for supporting biking.

Then, at 8 p.m., a group of bikers will ride the Kickapoo Rail Train from Weaver Park to Saint Joseph for a sunset bike ride. Once arriving at Saint Joseph, the riders can have a bite to eat and then enjoy a night ride back to Weaver Park.

"People can come celebrate National Bike Month at Weaver Park, even if they don’t want to go on the sunset ride," Hedgspeth said.

People can use the overflow parking area at the Champaign County Highway Building at 1605 E Main Street, Urbana. The rain date is Thursday, May 24. State law requires bikes to have lights for the night ride and riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets. For more information, visit www.prairiecycleclub.org

Hedgespeth concluded, "Urbana is a great place to ride bikes, and we want provide a fun free event for everyone who rides a bike."
