Yoga truly is for every body

Have you ever wanted to try Yoga but think you’re too old, not flexible enough or not coordinated enough? Urbana Park District wants you to know that they have a class just for you.

“Our program ‘Yoga for Every Body’ is a literal one,” said Elsie Hedgspeth, Outreach and Wellness Manager. “Yoga is accessible for everyone, regardless of age, physical strength or flexibility.”

The class meets every Tuesday and Thursday at Anita Purves Nature Center from 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. Class runs from July 2, through August 22 and is for people ages 15 and older.

“Each class is tailored to meet the needs of the students,” Hedgspeth explained. “Our instructors use props and different postures. We also emphasize posture, breath and a mind/body connection.”

Yoga is good exercise, but it is also a good mental exercise. “Meditation and breath control reduces stress and actually helps heal the nervous system,” Hedgspeth added.

The class is open for registration from now until July 2. The class costs $70 for residents and $102 for non-residents. You can visit UrbanaParks.org, or call (217) 367-1544 to register.

“We don’t want people to think Yoga is for people of a certain size and ability,” Hedgspeth said. “Yoga is for everyone, and this class is a welcoming one for everyone.

“Give Yoga a try. We think you’ll like it,” Hedgspeth concluded.
