Learn grocery shopping tips at nutrition workshop June 18

Grocery shopping can be an overwhelming experience, especially if shoppers want healthy options. Urbana Park District is offering a free Nutrition Navigation workshop June 18, from Noon – 1 p.m., at Phillips Recreation Center.

“We will teach people how to shop smartly,” said Elsie Hedgspeth, Outreach and Wellness Manager. She added, “We will take people on a virtual tour around some local grocery stores in Urbana. So, if a person goes to a natural food store or a big-box grocery store, they will know how to shop smartly,”

It can be overwhelming to try and interpret food labels. “We will show people how to properly read food labels so they can make sense of food claims,” Hedgspeth explained.

The class if free, but Urbana Park District needs people to sign up before June 18. They can sign up online or call (217) 367-1544.

Hedgspeth hopes that people will leave the workshop armed with information to make healthy choices. “We hope our information will cause people to be concise and informed shoppers. We hope to see many people at our free class,” she added.
