Spring is here and it’s time to get your dog out and running in the fresh air. People who need some space for their dog to romp can buy a Dog Park membership from Urbana Park District.

The Dog Park is located at 1501 E. Perkins Road in Urbana. The 10-acre area is especially for dogs to run off leash and is open from sunrise to sunset. It has a shaded grove of trees and lots of open meadow areas. This park provides a fun place for dogs to play and for people to meet and get to know other dog owners. The site has running water Spring through Fall and two separate fenced in areas, including a smaller area for timid dogs.

“The park is open sunrise to sunset and members are welcome to stay as long as they want,” said Judy Miller, Environmental Program Manager. She added, “Dogs must be supervised at all times and should easily return to their owner when called. Children under 6 years old are not allowed and no food is allowed in the park.”

The park is fenced in and there is a locked gate to make sure only members can get in. “We give members a key fob that opens the gate,” Miller explained.

For Urbana residents it costs $41 for a membership at $10 for a key fob. For non-residents, it is $61 for a membership plus the $10 fob fee. Each additional dog costs $6. People can take up to three dogs to the park at a time.

The park district spells out all the Dog Park rules online. People must have their dog up to date with all their vaccinations and have proof of vaccination.

Call the park district at (217) 367-1544 to find out more and to buy a membership.

Miller added, “The park provides a great large space where your dog can run and where dogs and people make new friends. Following the rules ensures that everyone enjoys their visit.”
